We’d like to welcome Karen to our team as our new content strategist at Staffing Robot. She has a background in writing, editing and proofreading. Learn a few things about Karen, you may be working with her soon!
Tell us about your content strategy and writing background.
Before joining the Staffing Robot team, I proofread and managed copy for some of the largest companies in the U.S. I’ve been published in print food and drink magazines, websites and alternative weeklies. I’ve also done content creation and management for companies like Citysearch (RIP) and Apartment List. I’m currently the editor at Drink Portland. I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism and mass communication.
What’s your favorite aspect of writing and content strategy?
I love writing because it allows me to give a voice to people or organizations that might not otherwise be allowed to share their story. I love working with companies on content strategy because it’s true what they say: content is king.
Favorite thing to do outside of work?
If I’m not at work, I want to be outside. I didn’t realize how much I love nature until I moved to Oregon three years ago. If it’s hiking, camping or treading water (never been a strong swimmer), I can get excited about it. The photo below is from a recent trip to Colombia. You might also find me at drink-related events in Portland or watching the Portland Trail Blazers.
Do you have a quote or mantra or swear word that gets you through particularly rough days?
“The masses are asses.”
When your inspirational quote fails you, do you have a favorite drink?
It will probably always be whiskey but right now, I’m really into sour beers and lambics. I’ve been getting more into smoky and sweet mezcal cocktails. Oh, and sparkling wine too. I guess I have a lot of favorite drinks.
Do you have any pets? kids? plants?
I’ve had a cat named Dolores for nine years. She learned to sit on command when she was still a kitten, so I decided to keep her around. My boyfriend has a ton of succulents and cacti, let me know if you want some of them.
Worst job you ever had growing up?
The best job I had with the worst name was a local drug store chain in Iowa called Drug Town.
Do you have any “heroes”?
Dennis Rodman. Somebody’s gotta rebound (and do the less glamorous work).
Favorite thing so far about working for Staffing Robot?
My coworkers are sincerely funny people and they work hard. The atmosphere here is amazing!
